  • CAPTION: (6/18/2007, Sun City Center) John Donnelly, 100, poses for a portrait at the Freedom Plaza retirement community in Sun City Center Monday afternoon. STORY SUMMARY: Since 1991, 100-year-old John Donnelly has won, by his estimation, four gold medals in table tennis for his age division at the Summer National Senior Games. His youthful energy will carry him and his wife of only five years, Marian, 76?, to this year's 2007 Senior Games, which begins June 22 in Louisville, Kentucky. The couple lives at the Freedom Plaza retirement community in Sun City Center, from where Donnelly goes down the street to practice table tennis every day. DANNY GHITIS | Times

  • The city earned the nickname "Ft. Liquordale" in the 80s when hundreds of thousands of college students flocked to its shores every March for spring break. Chaos reigned for the whole month with a displaced frat party on steroids. Public urination/nudity/intoxication was the norm, and the quiet residents and retirees has to step aside...These days the city has clamped down on the debauchery, catering toward wealthy tourists by replacing cheap hotels with a skyline of luxury condos. Las Olas Boulevard nearby offers upscale boutiques, art galleries and fine dining. On the beach, Mounted police maintain the strict new regulations, checking IDs for underage drinking and posing a constant reminder of the consequences for bad behavior. ..But many students still return in hopes of reigniting the legend of Ft. Lauderdale beach.

Apart from limited visits by one doctor and two nurses, families are left to care for the victims of dowry burnings and kerosene accidents. India's most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, ranks highest in the world for mortal flame burns.
